About the Artist

Kati MahdaviI bought my first dollhouse kit when I was 10 years old, thinking I would finish it in a day. It was the Newport Mansion by Real Good Toys, which is a pretty huge dollhouse to say the least. I built it, electrified it, and wallpapered all the walls within a week (it was very sloppy work, as you can imagine). I went out and bought all the furniture and accessories for it. But as it was taking a lot more of my time than I had expected, I grew impatient and overwhelmed with how much work was involved in the house. Being a 10 year old kid, I got distracted with after-school activities and sleepovers with friends and I eventually left the house unfinished.

Well, another 10 years went by and the house sat in my garage, still unfinished. Every time I entered my garage, I was reminded of my "failed project". At the time, I was taking my first business class at University and was learning about selling and marketing. I immediately thought what a good opportunity for me to make my money back on this failed house. So, with the idea of re-doing the house and selling it to make a profit, I took a hammer to the walls and knocked down my poorly constructed, giant house. I re-built it from the ground up, making sure that it was constructed to perfection. But as I spent more and more time on it, I grew to like working on this house…maybe even love it. My feelings towards the house shifted from frustration and disgust to pure happiness. When I worked on it, my imagination was able to run wild and I found myself constantly thinking about miniatures and creating them for my dollhouse. The possibilities were endless and it was like creating my own little world. It was at this point that I realized my passion for dollhouse miniatures. In the end, I chose not to sell it of course, and never will! It is something that I hold very dear to my heart and will always be reminded of how I got into the wonderful world of miniatures.

Making and designing miniatures is my way of expressing my creativity and imagination. I have always been passionate about the arts, whether it is textile design or sculpting. Experimenting with different techniques and materials is something I do on a daily basis. I keep trying new techniques until I find the ones that work best for me and am satisfied with the finished result. I am constantly evolving as I learn more and more from the people around me and the experiences I have. I get inspired by so many things, and automatically think of how I can recreate it in miniature. I am very detail oriented, so all my pieces tend to have intricate design elements that have been carefully placed and arranged in order to create an elaborate finished design. I have to be proud of every piece I make in order for me to offer them to my customers. With that said, I hope you enjoy my creations and find something that you truly fall in love with just as I have!
